Resolved For Blog

Some people have the same resolutions every time the calendar turns over to January 1… again...

  • Lose weight
  • Join a gym
  • Read through the Bible

Here are a few of our New Year’s resolutions...

Spend less than $1,825 on coffee at Starbucks this year.

Yes, it’s great to get out and stimulate the economy by spending money. And even though Starbucks is a large national chain, putting money into your local shop of any chain makes a difference in the lives of those people that work there...and they are your friends and neighbors...and maybe family! But it’s also true that we could all stand to spend a little less on frivolous things like fancy coffee or eating out for lunch so often. Instead, maybe consider bringing leftovers to work and getting a subscription to a favorite coffee in K-cups.

Correctly use there, their, and they’re.

Seriously, folks, this whole concept isn’t difficult. And I don’t just say that because I was an English major. Same with “its” and “it’s,” “your” and “you’re,” or “then” versus “than.” When you want to be taken more seriously, you need to use words that actually mean what you are trying to convey, as well as words that are correct in the context of the setting you are working in. Learn the differences between and present yourself as a professional.

Starting next week, I will stop procrastinating.

It’s not just about putting things off...it’s any and all of your bad habits that get in the way of being productive and effective at work, in relationships...just at life in general. You might be easily torn away from important tasks and leave things unfinished. Maybe you are too hypercritical of yourself or other people. Whatever it is, consider taking a personal inventory of the weak points in your life...stuff that is holding you back from being everything you can be. You may not want to tackle everything at once, but as long as you keep making progress you can call it a win.

Jump off a mountain.

One of us here at ClearBox did just that last year. The point is to take risks...do something that makes you uncomfortable and that you thought you would never do. Or do something that you’ve always wanted to do but keep putting off for no particular reason. For 2021, I’m planning to go white water rafting and am thinking about trying surfing when I get back to California. When Clay decided to form ClearBox, he took a figurative leap into the unknown...maybe it's trite, but it's true: Fortune favors the bold. Take a chance and jump...professionally and personally...great risks can bring great rewards.

Perform random acts of kindness more often.

In 2020, we worked with a local service organization to promote a large event for them during the pandemic. One of the things we encouraged everyone to do was perform random acts of kindness. It can be for your neighbor, a parent, your spouse, one of your kids, a co-worker...or a complete stranger. What is important is that you think about someone else first...what do they need? What might they want? What is going to help them be better...happier...today...or just in this moment? Do something nice for someone without any expectation that they will reciprocate. The act of kindness you perform is its own reward. Keep spreading the love and kindness throughout the year. Maybe you can change someone’s day. If enough people do it, maybe you change your neighborhood. If enough neighborhoods get involved, you can transform your city. And so on...it all starts with you.

So what are your (not “you’re”) resolutions for 2021? Leave a comment and let us know!
